The Modelling and Forecasting Facility of the ICTS SOCIB develops high-resolution predictive models and conducts scientific research for the continuous improvement of these models.

Modelling and Forecasting

The Modelling and Forecasting Facility of the ICTS SOCIB develops three models:

The Western Mediterranean OPerational forecasting system (WMOP), a prediction model for the Western Mediterranean Sea that represents the evolution of currents, temperature, salinity, and sea level.
The Autonomous Wave Forecast System (SAPO), which shows the evolution of wave characteristics (height, period, and direction) on the coasts of the Balearic Islands.
The Balearic RIssaga Forecasting System (BRIFS), a model to predict the formation of meteotsunamis in the port of Ciutadella (Menorca).

The ICTS SOCIB provides open access to the model outputs through KMZ and NetCDF files or using different visualization tools, both static and interactive (e.g., Lw4nc2, a tool that offers improved control and functionality).

The Mediterranean: A Small-Scale Laboratory

The Mediterranean Sea, with 46,000 kilometers of coastline, consists of two similarly sized basins: western and eastern, connected by the Strait of Sicily. The Mediterranean is considered a small-scale laboratory.

The physical processes of the great oceans occur in the Mediterranean on a smaller scale, making it an ideal system to address its complexity and advance the understanding of the global ocean.

Moreover, the Mediterranean region concentrates 10% of the world's biodiversity and 80% of all Mediterranean European species.
