The Balearic Islands Coastal Observing and Forecasting System (ICTS SOCIB) is celebrating the "Nit de la Recerca 2025." This event, part of the European Researchers’ Night, offers a unique opportunity for the public to discover the world of marine research through guided tours of the Research Vessel R/V SOCIB and a series of fun and free activities for all audiences.

Exciting activities designed to immerse you in the fascinating world of science and oceanography
Experience a unique journey aboard the R/V SOCIB, a true floating laboratory. During this event, you’ll have the chance to closely explore state-of-the-art scientific equipment used in oceanographic campaigns in the Balearic Sea and the western Mediterranean. These tours, organized in 25-minute shifts, will allow you to discover how researchers use these advanced tools to study and protect our oceans.

Enjoy a relaxed conversation with researchers from ICTS SOCIB while exploring key topics in marine research. From advanced observation technologies such as high-frequency coastal radar, lagrangian platforms, and gliders, to the detection of marine heatwaves and beach monitoring, this space offers you the opportunity to learn how science is contributing to the conservation of our seas. Targeted at sea lovers, those curious about science and oceanography, and students interested in marine research. (Note: Alcohol will not be served to anyone under 18).
The little ones will also have their space at the "Nit de la Recerca". This workshop, designed for children aged 5 to 11, will offer educational activities that spark curiosity about oceanography. From colouring sheets to puzzles and construction games, each activity is designed to inspire the next generation of marine scientists.
Dive into a visual showcase that highlights the scientific work of ICTS SOCIB in ocean research and conservation. Through a selection of stunning images, this exhibition will help you understand the importance of ocean observatories and their crucial role in protecting the marine environment.

On Friday, September 26, in the Plaza de la Escalera Real in the port of Palma, there will also be a variety of free activities for all audiences. From 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, researchers from Public Research Organizations in the Balearic Islands and the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) will offer micro-talks and workshops, among others.
The "Nit de la Recerca de les Illes Balears 2025" is part of a Europe-wide event, the European Researchers’ Night, which has been promoted by the European Commission since 2005 under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions within the Horizon program. This event, organized in collaboration with various public and private institutions, takes place simultaneously in over 300 cities across 30 European countries on the last Friday of September. Its aim is to bring research and innovation closer to the public of all ages in an engaging and participatory way.
