The new building of the Balearic Islands Coastal Observing and Forecasting System (ICTS SOCIB), currently under construction, is located on the old pier of the Port of Palma, in Mallorca. It occupies a public port domain plot of 958.85 m² (Camí de l’Escullera, 4), situated within Palma’s Marine R&D&I Hub, facing the Mediterranean Sea. A privileged environment in the city, connecting with the Paseo Marítimo and the Parc de la Mar.
The construction of the new ICTS SOCIB building represents an institutional alliance of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MICIU), the Government of the Balearic Islands (GOIB), and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) to strengthen the Spanish scientific and technological system in the field of marine sciences and technologies. It represents an investment of €7.5 million, co-financed by the CSIC and the GOIB, through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
El nuevo edificio del SOCIB, actualmente en obras, estará ubicado en el muelle viejo del Puerto de Palma, en una parcela de dominio público portuario de 958,85 (Camí de l’Escullera, 4) m² frente al mar Mediterráneo. Un entorno privilegiado de la ciudad de Palma, que conecta con el Paseo Marítimo y el Parc de la Mar.
La construcción de la sede del SOCIB, supone la alianza institucional del Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MCIN), el Govern de les Illes Balears (GOIB) y el Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) para fortalecer el sistema científico y tecnológico español en el ámbito de las ciencias y las tecnologías marinas y supone una inversión de 7.500.000 €, cofinanciados por el CSIC y el GOIB, a través del programa operativo FEDER de la Unión Europea.
Designed by Jovino Sierra Arquitectos, it will consist of three floors and a basement: the basement floor (773 m2), the first floor (717 m2), the first floor (764 m2), the second floor (746 m2), and the roof (32 m2).
An investment of €7.5 million, co-financed by the CSIC and the GOIB, through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). This action has been designated as an Operation of Strategic Importance within the framework of the ERDF 2021-2027 Programme of the Balearic Islands.
